OMG, YOU GUYS!!!

Prop 8 Unconstitutional

It's not as broad a ruling as the original - this would apply only to California - but it's a start.

Yuletide Gift

OMG, you guys. YOU GUYS, you have NO IDEA.

I got a Yuletide story and it's the funniest bestest story EVAR.

Texts from Cephalopods

I can't ... it's hysterical. It's a wonderful holiday gift, just exactly what a Yuletide should be filled with.

Go look, laugh, admire, be jealous!

Any religious organization which pays for lobbyists should lose its tax-free status. (We won't get into the fact that I think ALL religious organizations should lose tax-free status. That's not the point of this post.)

The Salvation Army is a religious organization and it discriminates against homosexuals and it pays political lobbyists to pass discriminatory laws. This is ugly.

Want to get even with the Salvation Army
for discrimination in Jesus' name?

Congress wants to take away your internet.

Originally posted by dynamicsymmetry at Congress wants to take away your internet.
Folks, I know you're tired of me yelling at you, but you should be aware that there's a hearing this morning being held by the US House Judiciary Committee on a "copyright" bill that will essentially break the entire internet.

You like the internet, right? I mean, you're here.

From the link above:

As drafted, the legislation would grant the government and private parties unprecedented power to interfere with the Internet's domain name system (DNS). The government would be able to force ISPs and search engines to redirect or dump users' attempts to reach certain websites' URLs. In response, third parties will woo average users to alternative servers that offer access to the entire Internet (not just the newly censored U.S. version), which will create new computer security vulnerabilities as the reliability and universality of the DNS evaporates.

It gets worse: Under SOPA's provisions, service providers (including hosting services) would be under new pressure to monitor and police their users’ activities. While PROTECT-IP targeted sites “dedicated to infringing activities,” SOPA targets websites that simply don’t do enough to track and police infringement (and it is not at all clear what would be enough). And it creates new powers to shut down folks who provide tools to help users get access to the Internet the rest of the world sees (not just the “U.S. authorized version”).

This is being framed as an attempt to fight hackers and pirates. Don't buy it. And don't think for a minute that it's going to stop there. This is bad. And at the hearing today, only one opponent of the bill is being allowed to testify.

Please do whatever you can to fight this. Email congresspeople. Sign petitions. Yell about it in every venue you can.

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

Prompts plz

So, for Christmas a couple of years ago, I made, for Merrie, a deck of cards with prompts on. She's always complaining that she doesn't know what to draw, so I mustered up 52 random prompts (ranging from You have been eaten by a grue. to more specific image-based things like A tall woman, standing alone in a dark forest.).

Now I'm thinking that I could use a similar deck, for writing and drawing. I can come up with some things on my own, but I'd love to have your help, so, um.

Help?

Prompt me? I can usually make either a story or an image out of many different things (I keep going back to a rhinocerous with a tea cup, for example) so anything goes. Rating no concern, silliness no concern, technical skill no concern (if I can't do it technically, I'll learn how).

*glee*

Thanks!

QR Fic, again

So, remember when I was talking about making little stickers with stories embedded in QR codes?

So, I still really want to do this. I've written a little original drabble, and made it into a qr code:

So. I'm happy to make this into stickers and stick them up around town and see what happens. (Also, I'll be continuing the story.) The thing is, I think it'll need an online base - should I make a LJ comm for it? I've checked and geofic.com appears to be already owned, if entirely unused. Also, geofic appears to be something else entirely already, so I can't use that name.

Ugh.

I don't want this to be another of my ideas that stalls out because the planning gets too baroque. Help?

For those who don't have a qr code reader in your phone, I'll put the drabble here:

Return from Space

It took ten years, but she finally got the ship working again. Three busy months of gathering supplies and saying goodbye later, she sat in the command chair.

Metal walls around her amplified the building roar of the engines; she spent a second missing the individually fitted ear protection she'd crashed with, then she rubbed her shoulder against the muffs the village girls made for her.

As the sky around her faded from blue to black, as her hands worked automatically to set the flight path, she didn't know if she was going home or leaving it.

***

I haven't put a name on it yet; I don't want to leave it uncredited, but I'm not sure how I want to credit it. Help again?

One of the things I want to do more of this year is read, so here I am, reviewing a book! It's short, and I read it on my phone, so I don't know the correct page count.

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (Download link here). Cory Doctorow allows free downloads of this story, and several others, through Creative Commons, which he (clearly) enthusiastically supports.

Anyway, on to the actual book.

Spoilers hereCollapse )

There. My first review. *pats it* I'm so proud.

Dear Yuletide Writer

Hello! I'm so happy to meet you. Please, come in. I'm sorry this isn't better decorated - I'm a bit chaotic and cluttered and, well, I'm distracted by making holiday gifts and trying to write NaNo and also, of course, by YULETIDE!!

This is my first year participating in this fest, so I'm a bit nervous.

Anyway! We share (at least) one lovely small fandom! I can't wait to find out which one - I get a lovely story and maybe a new friend.

I'll be pretty muchly blanket friending people for the next few weeks. I can't make my journal public, but I do want you to know more about me, as it's much easier to write for someone you know, isn't it?

Um, I should probably mention any squicks or, kinks, right? I'm mainly squicked by unnecessary cruelty (infidelity falls into this), chan, and humiliation. I'm not unwilling to read quite sexy things, as I participate in one of the big, oversexed fandoms, so if you want to get pretty hard core, you can. With the exception of chan - I'm NOT AT ALL interested in that, so if you want to write anything with the kids being sexual, please age them up! Thanks!

Other than that, I'm just amazed that there are other fans of my favorite stories.

On to the specifics.

Thursday means To Do Lists

Okay, so it's been a while since I posted one of these. This one isn't even that long, really.

To DoCollapse )

Oh, and we're a potty mouthed family. So, Merrie was talking about ... something and she used the word Fuck. A few times. Finally, Fred broke in and said, "Hey, stop that. Fuck is not a comma."

*dies of giggles*

We're all the Williams child here.

I'd better get started, then, hadn't I?

Friendship is an interesting thing.

Friendship meta.Collapse )

Anyway, I guess my point, if I have one at all is this: How do you tell? How can you know when you’ve moved past acquaintance and into friendship? When does friendship become family? Many of the people I’ve met here, online, have become my *family* - more than friends. (Or maybe I’m mis-defining that as well…)

What do you think?
